This advanced course allows students to gain an internationally recognised Level 3 Diploma focusing on the application of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in a practical comprehensive home project. This hands-on course will require students to physically go into a real home, with real clients using the current market and utilise the skills they have gained to complete a comprehensive interior design project through a detailed case study. Students will explore the synthesis of various design elements from design contracts, spatial planning, furniture selection, material choices, lighting design, and technical drawings. This course will require 4 in person lessons but students will have up to 12 weeks to submit and complete their final project.

Optional add on: Case Study students have the exciting opportunity to add on a Final Field element to the course. Students who select this option will study and work with our partner interior design and construction firm for a 3-4 days of hands on training and then spend 4-6 weeks working on real interior design projects. This course aims to enhance students’ ability to conceptualise, develop, and execute interior design projects to professional standards.

  • What does the course cover?

    Students who wish to complete Design Synthesis: An Advanced Interior Design Case Study must have completed the Training Diploma in Interior Design: Professional Practice. The course will include: 

    Topic 1: Introduction to Design Synthesis

    • Overview of the course objectives, structure, and assessment criteria.
    • Introduction to the case study project and client brief.
    • Discussion on the importance of design synthesis in interior design projects.
    • Present Design packages to client and initial meeting.
    • Design contract for the client, negotiation and approval.

    Topic 2-3: Client Needs Analysis and Concept Development

    • Techniques for conducting client brief and gathering project requirements.
    • Analysis of site conditions and constraints.
    • Site visit with site meaurement.
    • Accurate floor plan and elevation drawings from site meaurements.
    • Concept development exercises to explore design directions and themes.

    Topic 4-5: Spatial Planning and Layout Development

    • Principles of space planning and circulation.
    • Developing preliminary floor plans and spatial arrangements.
    • Integration of zoning, circulation, and ergonomic considerations.
    • Presentation scheme to client and feedback.
    • Changes and amendments

    Topic 6-7: Furniture Selection and Material Palette

    • Understanding furniture styles, scale, and proportion.
    • Selection of furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FF&E).
    • Exploration of material palettes, finishes, and textures.
    • Procurement of samples
    • Sample board construction with detailed BOQ

    Topic 8-9: Lighting Design Integration

    • Fundamentals of lighting design and its impact on interior spaces.
    • Selection and placement of lighting fixtures to enhance functionality and ambiance.
    • Integration of natural and artificial lighting sources.
    • Ceiling designs
    • RCP and electrical looping

    Topic 10-11: Technical Drawings and Specifications

    • Introduction to technical drawing standards and conventions.
    • Production of detailed floor plans, elevations, sections, and construction details.
    • Coordination with a contractor for technical MEP drawings.
    • Timelines for client
    • Development of specifications for materials, finishes, and fixtures.

    Topic 12: Project Presentation, Budget and Review

    • Preparation and delivery of design presentations to simulate client meetings.
    • Final BOQ with value engineering
    • Peer review and critique sessions to evaluate design concepts and proposals.
    • Reflection on the design synthesis process and lessons learned.
  • Objectives

    • Analyse and interpret client needs and project requirements.
    • Apply advanced design principles and theories to develop innovative interior design solutions.
    • Develop comprehensive spatial plans and layouts to optimize functionality and aesthetics.
    • Select appropriate furniture, fixtures, and materials considering sustainability, durability, and aesthetic appeal.
    • Integrate lighting design principles to enhance spatial quality and ambiance.
    • Produce detailed technical drawings and specifications for project implementation.
    • Present design concepts and proposals effectively to clients and stakeholders.

  • Requirements

    This course is designed for students who have completed the Interior Design Diploma: Professional Practice or have equivalent professional experience. Prior knowledge of design principles, drafting techniques, and software proficiency (e.g., AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite) is required.
  • Materials

    • Programming: Computer with at least 4GB RAM and a wheel mouse. The software must be purchased at the students own cost. Trial versions will be used for level 1 courses. TDS has student rates with SketchUp.
    • Interior Design: Scale ruler, tracing paper, graph paper, double sided tape, metal ruler, Stanley knife, scissors, glue, A4 white paper, A2 foam board
  • Internship & Work

    Case Study students have the exciting opportunity to add on the Final Field element to the course. students who select this option will study and work with our partner interior design and construction firm for a 3 day intensive and on training and then spend 4-6 weeks working on real interior design projects. This course aims to enhance students’ ability to conceptualise, develop, and execute interior design projects to professional standards.

  • How is the Diploma Accredited?

    The internationally recognised Diploma is accredited by the UK based AIM Qualifications. The Diploma is a Level 3 Diploma in Professional Interior Design.
