After school I studied Architecture in the UK but ended up working in sustainability and engineering. I was then very fortunate to have a career break to raise my family and now my children are in full time school, I felt this was a perfect opportunity for me to get back to my creative roots and enrolled on the Diploma programme at TDS. I’ve not looked back since! I now work on both commercial and residential projects and I’m also developing a range of paintings and limited edition prints.

What do you love about being an interior designer?

I love being creative and designing spaces that really have an impact on the inhabitant’s experience of a place and can truly impact their quality of life.

Why did you like learning interior design with The Designers Studio?

The Diploma programme was flexible so I was able to fit it around family commitments. The tutors are incredibly supportive, knowledgeable and have real industry experience within the Middle East. I also really enjoyed being a part of the TDS community. After having had a career break, it was the perfect environment to refresh my old architecture skills and to build up my confidence to re-enter the workplace.

Tell us a little about your featured project:

I was approached by Better Living magazine to do a feature on my home here in Dubai. As it’s my own (albeit a rental) villa, I’ve been able to be a little bolder than I might do on client projects. Since leaving the UK and putting my European antiques in storage, I have collected various eastern pieces of furniture and artwork. I have been able to go bolder and more exotic with my room schemes here as they’re more suited to the climate, architecture and setting in Dubai. My most treasured possession is my De Gournay hand painted silk wallcovering.

What advice would you give to current students?

Just go for it and go wild with your designs! When there is only a fictional client involved and an unlimited budget, go big and bold with your imagination and designs.

What is your signature style?

I’m an eclectic, maximalist, colour lover. I did go through a ‘taupe/greige Kelly Hoppen’ phase, but it didn’t last long as I personally love colour too much. I like a space that appears curated and timeless as if it has evolved naturally over time and expresses the personality of the client as well as meeting the aspirations of their lifestyle.

What does a typical day look like ?

I start my days screaming at my children to put their shoes on and get them out the door to school. Then I’ll head up to my home studio and alternate between admin, design work and painting. My work stops when the children are home from school but if I have a deadline I will work again once they’re in bed. It was important to me to forge a career that is flexible to fit around my family.
