Description

In this advanced Fashion Design course, students will tie together their previous fashion courses to understand dress construction. Students will begin with the basics & learn about major styles, materials to measurements. After they have mastered this technique, students will start understanding the basics of draping on a mannequin for evening gowns creating interesting, beautifully organic shapes.

    • Standard body measurements
    • Activity: mannequin measurement activity
    • Seams with dress design
    • Dart manipulation
    • Introduction to embellishing techniques
    • Introduction to draping with fabric for evening gowns

     

    • Create a working design visual for a dress
    • Estimate the cost and time required to make a dress
    • Fabric preparation for pattern cutting
    • Calico fabric for sample pieces

     

    • Develop a statement of intent
    • Produce a range of samples specific to a chosen design
    • Pattern construction and making: in scale size ¼
    • Measurements and pattern cutting
    • Creating a pattern block from cardboard scale size 1/1
    • Preparation of materials for cutting
    • Introduction to pressing and ironing techniques
    • Lay plan for cutting with sustainable material waste

     

    • Construct dress using machine stitching to a selected design
    • Finish & final fitting for dress
    • Present the dress following a design specification
    • Produce a cost sheet
    • Produce production timescales
    • Evaluate completed dress.

    *Spare equipment is available in class

    **Sewing machines are provided for class however, it is recommended to have a sewing machine at home for practice.

  • Internship & Work

    Internships and the work placement program is only in conjunction with the Diploma. If you would like work placements it is recommended to take the Fashion Design Diploma.
